Consultations with the sanding contractor revealed our options to be very few. We could use Papier-mâché or a mix of glue and sawdust, pushed into the gaps and re-sanded; we could take up and relay the entire floor, eliminating gaps in the process, or of course, buy a carpet. None of these options appealed to us, but research in DIY stores and on the Internet produced two very surprising facts:
As living room heating can represent around 25% of total home heating bills it was clear that beautiful floors came at a price to the householder and the planet. The solution would need to satisfy differing requirements: Fill the gaps but allow vacuuming and routine cleaning. Seal widely varying and irregular gaps. Compensate for further movement of the wood. Be inconspicuous. Be inexpensive . Be easily applicable, with no installation costs. Be environmentally friendly Numerous designs and materials were tried until a solution was developed:
STOPG-P is inexpensive, avoids the use of sealants and their associated solvents, is not messy, works in any gap from 1mm to 8mm and is hardly visible.
A 12' by 12'room, for example, can be fitted with STOPG-P in under an hour.
STOPG-P can be also be used almost anywhere there is a gap to be filled: under skirting boards or in old sash windows, to reduce dirt, dust, spiders, flies, heat, light, even noise.
